Masks by Past Graduate Students
Exploring the Arts
Below are 4 questions that are usually done as a reflection
after art-making. Since you just made your mask, I want you to set your mask in
front of you as if you are going to have a conversation with it. We will give
it a voice.
You will need a blank piece and a pen to write
with.
Have your mask in front of you. Or any artwork
you would like to journal with.
The 4 questions will be written with your dominant
hand (the one you write with)
The replies will be written with your
nondominant hand (the hand you DO NOT write with) Sometimes I switch back and
forth… Whatever feels best as I am expressing and things are flowing.
Allow yourself to be like a child and answer the
questions in an honest and pure manner. Using your nondominant hand helps you
express freely as you tap into your nonjudgmental, nonanalytic part of your
brain. Do not worry about spelling or anything but writing what is coming from
your heart. NO ONE IS READING THIS BUT YOU. There isn’t any judgment. There
isn’t a wrong answer. Give yourself the freedom to hear what your art-making is
expressing.
Write a question, then reply. Then, go to the
next question. Your answers can be as long or short as you feel….
Let’s begin:
Looking at your mask, ask…..
Question #1: What is your name, or who are you?
Question #2: How do you feel?
Question# 3: Why do you feel this way?
Question #4: What message do you have to tell me?
Dr. Lucia Capacchione is a pioneer with 20 books on how to
journal and learn what is being expressed. If you want to know more, you can go

Keep what you wrote, lock it up, throw it away, share it
with others… It is up to you. When we create art, there are a lot of
subconscious things going on. Our mind, body, and spirit are always trying to
express and make sense of our life and the world. Enjoy the process. You may
want to start keeping a journal……
